Perovskites are a promising alternative to traditional silicon solar panels, offering potential advantages in being lightweight, inexpensive, and versatile. They can be coated onto various substrates and are becoming comparable to silicon in converting sunlight to electricity. However, their longevity is a significant drawback, as they tend to break down within months to years, while silicon panels can last over two decades. Additionally, their efficiency over large areas still needs to catch up to silicon.

A team of researchers at MIT and several other institutions has discovered ways to optimize efficiency and better control degradation in perovskite solar cells by engineering their nanoscale structure. The study offers new insights into creating high-efficiency perovskite solar cells and provides valuable guidance for engineers aiming to commercialize these solar cells.

The new study addressed the ability to passivate interfaces and elucidate the physics and science behind the effectiveness of this passivation, according to Bulovic. The team employed some of the most powerful instruments available at laboratories worldwide to observe the interfaces between the perovskite layer and other materials in unprecedented detail.

While the bulk of a perovskite material consists of a perfectly ordered crystalline lattice of atoms, this order breaks down at the surface, where there may be extra atoms or vacancies causing defects that lead to efficiency losses. Passivation addresses this issue by reducing the energy loss of electrons at the surface after they have been excited by sunlight, thereby boosting the overall efficiency of sunlight-to-electricity conversion. Rapid improvements in the materials’ efficiency could result from this approach. Recent efficiency records for a single perovskite layer, several of which were set at MIT, have ranged from about 24 to 26 per cent, while the maximum theoretical efficiency is estimated to be about 30 per cent.

Many studies in this field have been based on observation, with the underlying mechanisms still needing to be fully understood. This study shows that treatments can passivate defects and create a surface field that repels carriers, which should improve the interfaces.

Integrated Motor Drivers For Efficient Real-Time Embedded Motor Control

An accompanying suite of support tools will streamline the development of motor control systems and expedite market readiness.

Microchip Technology Inc. has launched a new family of integrated motor drivers based on its dsPIC Digital Signal Controllers (DSC). These devices integrate a dsPIC33 DSC, a three-phase MOSFET gate driver, and an optional LIN or CAN FD transceiver into a single package, offering a comprehensive solution for efficient, real-time embedded motor control in space-constrained applications.

Integrating multiple functions into one chip reduces the components required for motor control system designs, leading to smaller PCB sizes and simplified design complexity. This mainly benefits automotive, consumer, and industrial applications where high performance and compact form factors are essential.

Key features of the integrated motor driver devices include:

  • Single power supply operation up to 29V (operation) and 40V (transient)
  • Internal 3.3V low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator for the dsPIC DSC
  • Operating frequencies between 70—100 MHz, enabling high CPU performance for advanced motor control algorithms such as field-oriented control (FOC)

The company supports the development and deployment of these integrated motor drivers with a comprehensive ecosystem of software and hardware tools, including development boards, reference designs, application notes, and the motorBench® Development Suite V2.45, a free GUI-based software tool for FOC. The dsPIC33CK Motor Control Starter Kit (MCSK) and the MCLV-48V-300W development board are two new development tools that provide rapid prototyping solutions with flexible control options for various motor control applications.

Joe Thomsen, Vice President of Microchip’s Digital Signal Controllers Business Unit, emphasised the advantages of the new integrated motor drivers, stating, “By integrating multiple device functions into one chip, the dsPIC DSC-based integrated motor drivers can reduce system-level costs and board space, meeting the evolving demands for higher performance and reduced footprints in various designs.”

Power Modules For AI Data Centres

The dual-phase power modules enhance data centre efficiency, reduce energy costs, and support decarbonization efforts for a sustainable future.

Power Modules For AI Data Centres
Power Modules For AI Data Centres

Artificial Intelligence is driving an increase in global data generation, leading to higher energy demands for chips that support this data growth. Infineon Technologies AG has launched its TDM2254xD series dual-phase power modules, which offer power density, quality, and total cost of ownership (TCO) for AI data centres. These products combine OptiMOS TM MOSFET technology with packaging and magnetic structure to deliver electrical and thermal performance with a mechanical design. This enables data centres to operate efficiently, meeting the power demands of AI GPU (Graphic Processor Unit) platforms while reducing TCO.

Given that AI servers require more energy than traditional servers and data centres already account for more than 2 percent of the global energy supply, it is crucial to develop power solutions and architectural designs that drive decarbonization. The dual-phase power modules and XDP TM Controller technology enable voltage regulation for computing platforms, ensuring electrical, thermal, and mechanical operation.

The modules’ design allows heat transfer from the power stage to the heat sink through an inductor design that effectively transfers current and heat. This results in higher efficiency than industry average modules at full load. Improving power efficiency at the core of a GPU can lead to energy savings at scale, which translates into megawatts saved for data centres computing generative AI. This leads to reduced CO2 emissions and dollars in operating cost savings over the system’s lifetime.

“This unique Product-to-System solution combined with our cutting-edge manufacturing lets Infineon deliver solutions with differentiated performance and quality at scale, thereby significantly reducing the total cost of ownership for our customers,” said Athar Zaidi, Senior Vice President of power & Sensor Systems at Infineon Technologies. “We are excited to bring this solution to market; it will accelerate computing performance and further drive our digitalisation and decarbonization mission.”

Study Finds Electrons Fractionalize In Graphene

MIT physicists have observed an exotic electronic state that could lead to more robust forms of quantum computing.

Image: Sampson Wilcox, RLE

Electrons, the basic units of electricity, carry a single negative charge. However, in particular states of matter, they can exhibit “fractional charge,” a rare phenomenon known as the “fractional quantum Hall effect.” This exotic electronic state has been observed several times, mostly under high magnetic fields. Recently, scientists have seen this effect in a material without such robust magnetic manipulation, offering the potential for resilient quantum computers.

MIT physicists have recently observed the elusive fractional charge effect in a simpler material: five layers of graphene, an atom-thin carbon layer. By stacking five sheets of graphene-like steps on a staircase, the structure naturally allows electrons to pass through as fractions of their total charge without requiring an external magnetic field. This discovery is the first evidence of the “fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect” in crystalline graphene, a material previously not expected to exhibit this effect.

The researchers have calculated that aligning the pentalayer graphene with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) could enhance electron interactions. Combining these materials is expected to create a moiré superlattice, an intricate atomic structure that slows down electrons in a way that mimics a magnetic field.

The researchers created two samples of the hybrid graphene structure by peeling graphene layers from a block of graphite and then using optical tools to identify five-layered flakes in a step-like configuration. They transferred the graphene flake onto a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). They covered it with a second hBN flake before attaching electrodes to the structure and cooling it to near zero. Upon applying a current and measuring the voltage output, they observed signatures of fractional charge, where the voltage is proportional to the current multiplied by a fractional number and fundamental physics constants. Further analysis confirmed that the graphene structure exhibited the fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect, marking the first time this effect has been observed in graphene.

The group continues their research on multilayer graphene to investigate other rare electronic states.
